Client: Scotland’s People

Scotland's People is the official online home of Scotland's national records, birth, marriage, census and church records, searchable by anyone tracing their family history. The brief evolved considerably: what began as a clinical, formal offshoot of the Scottish Government site moved back towards an identity of its own. The result was a full website redesign with an accompanying design system, built on Drupal.

Involvement: Lead UI Designer

I built the design system and component library from the ground up, a set of building blocks the team could slot in wherever they were needed. The biggest challenge was bringing users with us; in testing, the existing audience were firmly against the idea of change. They had used the old site for years and knew exactly where everything lived, so the redesign had to earn its changes rather than assume them. I was closely involved in the UX throughout, shaping the work around that resistance rather than in spite of it.
